ISA/USA FAQ
International Submariners Association / USA
What is the ISA/USA?
The International Submariners Association is a global alliance of Submarine veterans and people with a high level of interest in submarines. There are approximately 17 countries with an ISA organization and active members. Each country’s ISA is organized within their own country and members are usually located within that country. The ISA/USA is organized in the United States and primarily consists of U. S. submarine sailors and veterans. The ISA/USA also has members who have not served on submarines, but have a high interest in submarine service. These are typically individuals with family members with submarine service.
What is the purpose of the ISA/USA?
The experience of submarine service is universal. Submarine veterans from Great Britain, Russia, Argentina or Israel have all lived the same conditions and experiences. The purpose of the ISA is to provide for these sailors to meet and express their common bond.
What are the advantages of membership?
Membership in the ISA/USA is a conduit to meeting annually with submarine sailors and veterans from many other countries. The fellowship shown at these annual conventions is heartwarming and demonstrates the deep connection that armed forces from differing countries can carry for each other. Each member from the countries represented served their countries as requested. Each is proud of their accomplishments and feels a kinship with other submarine sailors.
Is there a "global" International Submariners Association?
No, the ISA can perhaps best be described as a loose affiliation of national associations who agree to meet in a different city each year. There is no real international organization, administrative structure or governing board nor is there such a thing as an "international ISA membership". Decisions as to where to have each annual congress are made on a consensus basis by delegation heads of those national delegations in attendance at the annual congress.
What are the annual conventions like?
ISA members from around the world meet to further share their submarine experience. The conventions consist of informal and formal dining. There are daily social periods allowing for interactions between those attending the conventions. The convention is rotated to a different country annually. Each country creates an agenda covering 4 to 5 days of activities. Each country attempts to highlight significant features and attractions from their country. These annual conventions are wonderful venues for touring and learning about different countries around the world.
Who can become a member of ISA/USA?
Membership in the ISA/USA is open to anyone with a strong interest in submarines and a strong interest in nurturing international goodwill. There is no gender restriction nor is there a nationality restriction. We currently have members from Great Britain and Argentina, as well as possible other countries. We have both men and women who are life members.
Are there different classes or levels of membership?
We only have one classification of member, everyone is the same. You can join as a Life Member or an Annual Member, but rights and privileges are the same for all members.
Who can serve as an officer of the ISA/USA?
Any member in good standing can serve as an officer of the organization. Each term is a two-year term and an officer may hold one position for two consecutive terms, if elected each term. There is one restriction, that the Board of Officers must have a minimum of three members who have Qualified on U. S. Submarines. This means that they satisfied all requirements and was approved by his commanding officer to wear the U. S. Submarine qualification designator of the Dolphin pin.
What are my obligations as a member of ISA/USA?
The organization’s Purpose is to foster friendship and goodwill internationally, remembering always our belief in the freedom of thoughts, words and deeds. We ask that you understand and respect the ISA/USA constitution and By-Laws. We encourage attendance at the annual convention, but attendance is not mandatory. There currently are no meetings held within the U. S. The organization has an elected board; this 5-member board consists of volunteers who are elected bi-annually.
